You have to proceed to the Northwest of the palace complex where you will
find the shield generator in a hole in the ground. Watch out for the Mad Cat
(Timber Wolf to you newbies). After destroying the generator, the mechs from
the palace complex will come after you. After you're done all this,
make sure you inspect the palace complex before you destroy it. After a dozen
trys at this scenario, I finally make it through the mechs with a working
energy weapon, only to destroy the complex without inspecting it first.
One final hint, give yourself a starmate and things go much easier.

To destroy the target of opportunity, destroy the entire palace compound.
